Foster Care Project in FuGong County, Yunnan Province

Introduction

Though the Nujiang River area in Yunnan province is very poor, there is still great beauty, both in the mountainous environment and in the local culture. The gentle and loving local Lisu minority, unlike many, cares for their neighbors, and takes in their orphans rather than abandoning them.
However, the health of these foster families need sattention. Family members are at risks of TB and seasonal malarial, with no preventive health care. Family's financial stability is at risk. There is not often enough food, clothing, shoes, etc., and the home itself often needs repair. Without outside help, families who take in orphans simply fall deeper into poverty year by year, even though relatives assist as they can. Though most school fees are waived through 6th grade, they are still too high for some families. Middle school fees are too expensive for most poor farm families.
An international volunteer team has helped the Fugong orphans and the foster families since 2003. They offer Foster Families and orphans basic physical checkup once a year, provide basic health and hygiene training, help orphans on educational matters, donate basic necessities, meet weekly with foster parents, and attend to orphan's emotional needs. The project's aim is to ensure that orphans live with relatives in loving, safe, healthy, and stable homes. Bright China Foundation (BCF) has provided part of the funding to this project.
