Willow Village Rebuilding and Expanding
 
Background of Project

¡¡ Willow village is situated in the Shimen Town of Weining Yi Autonomous County of Hui, Miao Nationalities, northwestern of Guizhou province. Weining County is a key anti-poverty county and Shimen Town is the most remote and poorest place. It is in the center of Wu Meng Mountain, over 140 km from the county, and the transportation is very difficult as so many gouges and vales. It integrates remote mountainous area, coldest area, and endemic disease frequent occurred area and poorest area.

The former name of Williow village was the Shimen Leprosary with 67 years of history. In1920, Zhang Daohui, a priest of Methodist, being sponsored by International Leprosy Association, established this Leprosary. In 1951, the hospital was taken over by the local people¡¯s government, and changed into a normal nature village till 1987. In 1999, the village was formally named as Willow village.

This village consists of people recovered from leprosy and their relatives, with a population of 54 in 17 families, at least 18 of them are leprosy patients. The villagers cannot be accepted out of discrimination. Children here cannot go outside for schooling, but to stay in the village. A primary school was ever sponsored and set up by Shenzhen Christian Church in 2002, but the education level was low. The farming land and houses were left to them by average in 1987 when aiding team left the village, and some of the houses have become decrepit houses that endanger the lives of villagers.

Project Objectives

Improve the living and housing condition of villagers and patients of Willow village, support their children to complete compulsory education.


Operation of project

¡¡¡¡BCF provides funds, Bijie Local Leprosy Prevention and Cure Mission is to supervise and manage, and Shimen Local Government is to operate in cooperation.

¡¡¡¡Rebuild houses for 17 families in Willow village, and build unsophisticated roads and set other supporting facilities to thoroughly change the living condition of leprosy patients and their families. At the same time, negotiated with local government and schools to ensure the schooling of the children and getting normal education.

Progress of project

Jul 17, 2005 BCF and China Leprosy Prevention and Cure Association, as well as Bijie Local Leprosy Prevention and Cure Mission paid visit to Willow village to get to know the real living condition of villagers and the three parties reached agreement and determined cooperation direction.
Aug 4, 2005 Agreement of Rebuilding Willow Village Houses Project sighed by Bijie Local Leprosy Prevention and Cure Mission and Shimen Local Government.
Sep 12, 2005 BCF and Bijie Local Leprosy Prevention and Cure Mission formally signed Agreement on ¡°Willow Leprosy Village Rebuild Project of Shimen Town in Weining County, Guizhou Province¡±
